Service belongs in work experience, written like a job, with numbers in it. Where it goes, what to write if your PPA gave you nothing to do, how to translate service-year duties into the words employers use, and the eight things to delete from every Nigerian CV template.

How to Put NYSC on Your CV (and What to Delete From the Nigerian CV Template You Downloaded)

THE SHORT ANSWER

Service goes in your work experience section, described like a job, with what you did and how much of it. It does not go under education and it is not a one-line mention of the certificate. While you are there, delete the things every downloaded Nigerian CV template still contains: the photograph, date of birth, state of origin, marital status, religion, referees' phone numbers, and the objective paragraph about seeking a challenging position in a reputable organisation.

Where the service year goes, and why

Put it in work experience, in the same format as any other role, at the top if it is your most recent. Not under education, not in a section called "Other", and not reduced to a single line saying you completed service.

The reason is simple. The person reading your CV is sorting a few hundred applications and looking for evidence that you have done work. Service is a year of work. Filing it under education tells them you do not think of it as work either, and they will agree with you.

Write it like this:

Administrative Assistant (National Youth Service Corps)

Name of your PPA, town, state · month to month

Moved three years of pupil records from exercise books into a spreadsheet now used daily by four teachers.

Answered and logged about fifteen calls a day from parents, and wrote the standard answers to the six most common questions into a one-page sheet the office still uses.

Taught two periods a day to classes of around forty, and prepared the termly progress summaries.

Notice the job title first and the scheme in brackets. You are describing the work, not the programme. Notice that every line has an amount or a frequency in it, so a stranger can picture the scale and check the claim.

What if your PPA gave you almost nothing to do?

This is the most common situation and it is not fatal. What is fatal is inventing things, because it falls apart in the interview the moment someone asks a follow-up question.

Two honest routes. First, describe accurately what did happen, at its real scale: a small number of periods taught, a specific set of records handled, whatever it genuinely was. Small and true reads far better than large and vague. Second, and better, go and create something in the time you have left. Find one thing that is broken, fix it without waiting for permission, and write that down. A single fixed process is worth more on a CV than a year of attendance.

We covered how to find that one thing, and what to do with the rest of the year, in the corper's year.

The certificate, the exemption letter, and where they belong

The discharge certificate is a credential, not an achievement. It goes in a short credentials or education line near the bottom, one line, no fuss. If you have an exemption or exclusion letter instead, say so in the same matter-of-fact way; nobody is interested in the reason and you do not owe an explanation.

What you should never do is build the CV around it. Some templates put "NYSC Discharge Certificate" in bold near the top as though it were a qualification. It is a fact that you served, which the work experience section has already told them.

Delete these from the Nigerian CV template you downloaded

Most free Nigerian CV templates are years out of date and carry a set of conventions that now actively harm you, especially with employers hiring for remote roles. Take all of this out.

  • Your photograph. Many international employers will not consider a CV with a photograph because it exposes them to discrimination claims. It also eats the space your evidence needs.
  • Date of birth, age, marital status, religion, state of origin, local government. None of it is relevant, and each line is a reason for somebody to decide something about you before reading your work.
  • Your full home address. City and country is enough, and a remote employer only needs to know your timezone.
  • The objective paragraph. "To secure a challenging position in a reputable organisation where my skills will be utilised" appears on tens of thousands of Nigerian CVs and says nothing. Replace it with three lines: what you do, the tools you do it with, one piece of evidence.
  • Referees with names and phone numbers. Write "references available on request", and protect those people's numbers until someone actually asks.
  • Skill bars and percentages. Nobody believes you are 85% proficient at anything and it cannot be checked.
  • Two-column layouts and sidebars. They look designed and read badly, and some application systems mangle them into nonsense.
  • Hobbies. Reading, travelling and meeting new people. Delete.

Rewrite the top third, which is the only part most people read

A first read lasts about six seconds and covers the top third of page one. Three things belong there.

  1. Your name, then the title of the job you are applying for. Not your current title. If the advert says Customer Support Representative, that is the line. It is not a lie; it is a statement of what you are applying to do, and it saves the sorter working it out.
  2. Three lines of summary. What you do, the tools, and one checkable piece of evidence.
  3. How to reach you, including the link to your one piece of proof.

Something like: Customer support for small teams. Comfortable in a shared inbox, a help desk and a chat queue. Handled about fifteen parent enquiries a day during my service year and wrote the standard answers the office still uses.

Turning service-year work into the words employers search for

Corps members undersell themselves by describing duties in NYSC language rather than in the language of the job they want. The work is often the same; the vocabulary is not.

Instead of

Assisted in the general administration of the school

Write

Kept pupil records for about three hundred pupils and produced termly progress summaries for four teachers

Instead of

Was involved in the community development service group

Write

Coordinated a team of twelve to run a health awareness day for roughly two hundred residents, including scheduling and supplies

Instead of

Handled office duties as assigned

Write

Managed the office inbox and phone, logging enquiries and replying the same day to routine ones

Community development service counts, by the way. It is usually the only place a corps member has organised people, money and a deadline at the same time, which is exactly what coordination roles hire for.

One CV per application, and why the template will not save you

Keep one master document with everything in it. For each application, copy it, cut it to one page, and change the title line and the summary to match the advert's own words. It takes about ten minutes.

This is why hunting for the perfect Nigerian CV template is mostly wasted effort. A template gives you a layout. What gets you read is the match between the top third of your CV and the advert in front of you, and no template can do that for you.

The whole of this, plus the profile, the application and the interview, is in our free Getting Ready to Be Hired course. Six short modules, nothing to buy, no account needed.

If there is a gap after service

Say it in one line and move on. "Took six months to care for a family member and now returning" or "spent that period learning customer support tools" is enough. A stated gap is a fact. A hidden gap is a question that makes a reader suspicious of everything else on the page, and hiding it is the only thing that turns it into a problem.

Frequently asked questions

Should NYSC go under education or work experience?

Work experience. It was a year of work. Under education it reads as a formality you completed rather than a job you did.

Do I still need a photograph on my Nigerian CV?

No, and for roles with international employers it can count against you, because many will not consider CVs with photographs for legal reasons. Some local employers still expect one; if a specific advert asks, add it for that application only.

What do I write if my PPA was a school and I want an office job?

Describe the parts of the school job that are office work, because most of them are: records, scheduling, communicating with parents, preparing reports, handling money for fees or supplies. Lead with those and keep the teaching short.

Can I include my community development service?

Yes, and you should, as a short entry with the scale in it. It is often your only example of organising people and a deadline.

How long should my CV be?

One page. Two only if you have a decade of experience, which as a recent corps member you do not. Anything longer is not read, it is skimmed and discarded.

Should I put my NYSC certificate number on the CV?

No. One line saying you completed service, in credentials, is enough. Give the number when an employer's paperwork actually asks for it.

Is a CV enough, or do I need a portfolio?

You do not need a portfolio. You need one thing an employer can open that shows the kind of work you are applying to do. One document is enough, and it belongs as a link under your contact details.

What if I have genuinely no experience at all?

Then the CV is not your immediate problem, evidence is. Make one piece this week, and read our guide to remote jobs in Nigeria, which covers what "no experience" adverts are really filtering for and which roles hire on evidence rather than history.
