Nursing schools in Nigeria: 23 routes into nursing, with fees where they are published
There are three ways to become a registered nurse in Nigeria. The hospital-based schools of nursing, most of them attached to federal teaching hospitals, run the basic nursing programme leading to the Nursing and Midwifery Council's registration examination. The state colleges of nursing have moved to the ND and HND structure. And the universities, federal, state and private, run the five-year BNSc. This page lists the schools families ask about on each route, with the fee and its source.
Two honest limits. Nursing schools publish fees less readily than universities, so many rows say 'not published'. And no school publishes its NMCN examination pass rate in a comparable form, so there is no ranking by results; the order is by route and then by fee transparency.

How this list is ordered
Grouped by route: teaching-hospital and state schools first, then mission hospital schools, then university BNSc programmes with private before federal, and within each group the schools with a sourced fee before those without. Position is not a judgement of teaching quality or NMCN results.

Fees. Per session unless the note says otherwise. Hospital schools charge tuition plus hostel, uniform and clinical levies; universities charge by programme and nursing sits near the top of every private university's schedule. 'Not published' means neither the institution nor a source we would cite prints a figure. Confirm with the school before paying.

Which route
The hospital schools take applicants with five O-level credits including English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics, through their own examination and interview, and cost the least; the programme now runs four years to registration. The BNSc adds a degree, takes five years, and at a private university costs from about ₦600,000 to more than ₦3m a session. The state colleges on the ND and HND route sit between the two. All three lead to the same NMCN registration.
What to check before paying
That the specific programme holds current Nursing and Midwifery Council accreditation, which lapses and is restored school by school. The last three years of the school's NMCN examination results, which the principal will have even if the website does not. The clinical placement hospital and how far it is from the campus. And the full fee: hostel, uniforms, clinical levies and the NMCN indexing fee are on top of tuition everywhere.
Questions parents ask about this list
How much does a school of nursing cost in Nigeria?
At the teaching-hospital and state schools, roughly ₦120,000 to ₦400,000 a session on the sources linked in the table, plus hostel and levies. Mission hospital schools sit in the same range or a little above. A BNSc at a private university runs from about ₦600,000 to over ₦3m a session; federal and state universities charge far less but admit by UTME cut-off.
What are the entry requirements?
Five O-level credits in not more than two sittings, including English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics; a minimum age, usually 16 or 17; and the school's own examination and interview. University BNSc programmes admit through JAMB with the university's cut-off.
Is a school of nursing certificate equal to a BNSc?
Both lead to registration as a nurse with the NMCN. The BNSc is a degree and opens the graduate route to postgraduate study and some public-service grades; the basic programme is shorter and cheaper. Many nurses do the basic programme first and top up.
Why does this page not rank schools by results?
Because no nursing school publishes its NMCN examination pass rate in a comparable form and we will not print a number we cannot source. Ask the school for its last three years.
