US small businesses hire remote bookkeepers to keep the books current and reconciled in QuickBooks Online or Xero. Here is what the job is, the line you never cross, who hires, and how to train for it from Nigeria.
Remote Bookkeeping Jobs for Nigerians: What US Small Businesses Actually Hire You to Do

A remote bookkeeper records, reconciles, reports and asks. Bank feeds and matching, invoices and bills, payroll entries from the provider's report, the month-end close and the profit and loss an owner reads on a phone, in QuickBooks Online or Xero. You never advise on tax, never hold a client's bank login and never move money; that boundary is what keeps you employable. Nigerians reach these roles through bookkeeping practices, agencies and direct hires, almost always after showing a clean reconciliation and a sensible question to an owner.

The job description matches current US postings for remote bookkeepers and the Academy's Virtual Bookkeeping track. Tax and legal rules are named so you know they exist; nothing here is tax advice.
What a remote bookkeeper does
A small business in the US has a bank feed of forty to sixty lines a week, invoices going out, bills coming in, a payroll run from a provider every two weeks and a report due to the owner on the tenth. The bookkeeper keeps all of it true: matching each feed line to the invoice or bill that already exists before adding anything, reconciling every account to the statement every month, posting payroll from the provider's report, closing the month in order, and writing a report pack the owner can read without an accounting degree.
The four verbs are record, reconcile, report and ask. The fourth is the one that separates a bookkeeper from a data entry clerk: a line you cannot place goes into a weekly batch of questions to the owner, never a guess.
The line you never cross
You do not advise on tax; that is the accountant's. You do not sign anything for filing; that is the CPA or tax preparer. You do not hold a bank login; the owner connects the feed and you read it. You never initiate a payment or a payroll. When an owner asks in December whether to buy a truck for tax reasons, the correct answer routes the question to their accountant the same day. Employers hire bookkeepers who know this line without being told, because the ones who cross it create liability.
Who hires Nigerians for this
Remote bookkeeping practices in the US that serve many small clients and staff their work offshore. Agencies that place bookkeepers with individual businesses. Direct hires by owners who already run cloud ledgers. The practices are the most common first employer because they supervise the work and set the standard; direct clients come later, usually by referral.
Every one of them will test the same two things: can you reconcile a month cleanly, and can you write to an owner who does not speak accounting.
How the Academy trains it
The Virtual Bookkeeping track is ten weeks on QuickBooks Online and Xero, with Wrenfield Plumbing & Heating, a fictional two-person contractor, as the teaching client whose numbers stay consistent all course, and Ledgerline Books, a fictional practice, for the two-week practicum. It costs ₦200,000. By Week 8 you have done the QuickBooks work that Intuit's free ProAdvisor certification tests, and the course walks you through signing up for that separately. The Academy certificate proves the work; ProAdvisor is Intuit's, not ours.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need an accounting degree?
No. The track starts with the five accounts and debits and credits explained plainly. What you need is care with numbers and the discipline to ask rather than guess.
Is this the same as being an accountant?
No. The accountant interprets and advises; the CPA signs and represents; the bookkeeper records, reconciles, reports and asks. The boundary is the point.
Will I be certified in QuickBooks?
Not by us. Intuit issues ProAdvisor certification and keeps its QuickBooks Online training and exam free at the time of writing; the track prepares you for it and shows you the process.
What does it pay?
It varies by practice, client, hours and market. We do not print a figure; check current postings on the platforms and ask the practice directly.
