Federal Universities in Nigeria

Government-funded excellence across Nigeria with affordable tuition, research output, national spread, and diverse programmes.

Common questions

What is a federal university in Nigeria?
One owned and funded by the federal government rather than a state or a private body. That ownership is why tuition is a fraction of private university fees, and why competition for places is fierce.
How many universities are there in Nigeria?
The National Universities Commission approved 309 universities as of February 2026, of which the federal institutions are the oldest and largest group.
How much does a federal university cost?
Published tuition sits in the low tens of thousands of naira a year at most federal institutions, but tuition is not the bill. Accommodation, acceptance fees, departmental levies, books and transport are where the year actually costs money. Ask what the full first year costs.
How do I get into a federal university?
Through JAMB's UTME, then the institution's own post-UTME screening, with five O-level credits including English and Mathematics as the common floor. The cut-off that matters is the one your course sets, not the national minimum.
Federal, state or private: which should I choose?
Federal universities are cheapest and hardest to enter. State universities sit in between and often favour indigenes on fees. Private universities cost several times more and compete on calendar stability and class sizes. Choose what the family can sustain for the whole degree, because transferring part way through is rarely straightforward.

Top Federal Universities

A federal university is owned and funded by the federal government rather than a state or a private body, and that ownership decides most of what follows. Tuition is a fraction of private university fees, which is why competition is fierce and why cut-off marks at the better known ones sit far above the national minimum. The National Universities Commission approved 309 universities in total as of February 2026, of which the federal institutions are the oldest and largest group.

Federal Universities in Nigeria brings the main decision points into one place for parents, students, school owners, and search users. Use the sections below to compare options, verify details, and move into SchoolRegistry records, tools, and related guides.

Affordable Tuition

Tuition at a federal university is low, but tuition is not the bill. Accommodation, acceptance fees, departmental levies, books and transport are where the year actually costs money, and they vary enormously between institutions and between faculties inside one institution. Ask what the full first year costs rather than what tuition costs, because the gap between those two numbers is where families get caught.

Research Excellence

The older federal universities carry most of Nigeria's research output and the postgraduate supervision that goes with it. For an undergraduate this matters less than people assume: it shapes the department you join in your final year and the options if you continue, not the quality of your first two years. Judge a specific department rather than the institution's name.

Diverse Programs

Federal universities carry the widest course range in the country, including the professional programmes with their own regulators: medicine, law, pharmacy, nursing and engineering. For any of those, the accreditation status of that specific programme matters more than the reputation of the university, because it decides whether you can register to practise at the end.

National Spread

There is at least one federal university in every state, which is deliberate policy rather than accident, and it means the cheapest credible degree is rarely far from home. The trade-off is that the older institutions in the south west and south east attract the strongest competition, so the same score opens different doors in different places.

Average Tuition

Published federal tuition sits in the low tens of thousands of naira a year at most institutions, against private university fees that run into the millions. Treat any single average with suspicion: faculties charge differently, some courses carry laboratory or clinical levies, and accommodation is the variable that moves the total most. The institution's own bursary page is the only figure worth planning on.

Admission Requirements

Entry runs through JAMB's UTME, then the institution's own post-UTME screening, with five O-level credits including English and Mathematics as the common floor and more required for competitive courses. The cut-off that matters is the one your course sets, not the national minimum. Our cut-off guide covers what institutions have asked for by course, and the chance calculator compares a score against the courses you are weighing.

University of Lagos

Lagos, federal, and one of the most competitive in the country across law, medicine, engineering and the social sciences. Being in Lagos is both the attraction and the cost: accommodation is scarce and expensive relative to other federal universities, so budget for living rather than for tuition.

University of Ibadan

Ibadan, Oyo, Nigeria's oldest university and still the strongest name in medicine and the humanities. Postgraduate depth is its real distinction. Competition for the professional courses is as hard as anywhere in the country.

Ahmadu Bello University

Zaria, Kaduna, the largest university in the country by campus and among the largest by enrolment, with particular strength in agriculture, veterinary medicine and engineering. Its size is the thing to plan for: the experience depends heavily on your department rather than on the institution.

University of Benin

Benin City, Edo, strong in medicine, pharmacy and engineering and the main federal option for the south south. Draws heavily from Edo, Delta and the states around them.

University of Nigeria, Nsukka

Nsukka, Enugu, the first indigenous university in the country and the main federal institution in the south east, with long-standing strength in the arts, agriculture and the sciences. Its second campus in Enugu carries medicine and law.

Nigerian Defence Academy

Kaduna, federal and military. Entry is a separate process from ordinary UTME admission, with physical and medical screening and a service commitment attached. Worth understanding fully before applying, because it is a career decision rather than only a course choice.

University of Ilorin

Ilorin, Kwara, with a reputation built on an academic calendar that runs more predictably than most, which matters more to families than league tables do. Strong in medicine, agriculture and the sciences.

Bayero University

Kano, the main federal university in the north west, with strength in medicine, agriculture and Islamic studies, and the largest intake in its region.

Federal University of Technology, Owerri

Owerri, Imo, one of the dedicated federal universities of technology, focused on engineering, technology and applied sciences rather than a full course range. Worth comparing against Akure and Minna, which were founded on the same model.

Nnamdi Azikiwe University

Awka, Anambra, federal, with medicine, law and engineering among its stronger faculties and a teaching hospital at Nnewi. The main alternative to Nsukka for candidates in the south east.

Obafemi Awolowo University

Ile-Ife, Osun, among the most selective in the country, known for architecture, law, medicine and a campus frequently called the most beautiful in Nigeria. Competition for the professional courses is severe.

University of Calabar

Calabar, Cross River, the federal option for the far south east, with medicine, agriculture and oceanography among its distinctive faculties.
