Federal unity colleges in Nigeria: all 99 by state, with the fee and the admission route
The federal unity colleges are the Federal Government's own secondary schools: 99 boarding colleges across every state and the FCT, admitting through the National Common Entrance Examination with places allocated by merit and by state quota so that each college mixes pupils from across the country. Tuition is free; the ₦100,000 a term set in 2023 pays for boarding, feeding, insurance and levies.

This is the complete list, in state order and then alphabetical, from the Federal Ministry of Education's roll of unity colleges as published by Premium Times and maintained on Wikipedia. It is not a ranking: unity colleges do not publish comparable results, and we do not print pass rates we cannot source. King's College and Queen's College are listed with the others.

Fees. One figure applies to every college: tuition is free and the ₦100,000 a term set by the Federal Ministry of Education in 2023 covers boarding, feeding, insurance and levies, as broken down by FIJ. Colleges add uniform, books and provisions lists; ask the college for the current invoice.

How admission works
Pupils in Primary 5 or 6 register for the National Common Entrance Examination, conducted by NECO, in the first months of the year and sit it around April or May. Each candidate names two colleges in order. Places are allocated by merit and by state quota, and the cut-off marks are published per state each year and differ widely between states; a family should check the previous year's figure for their state of origin before choosing. Selected pupils are invited to the college for registration; the fee is paid then.
The five kinds of college
Federal Government Colleges are co-educational; Federal Government Girls' Colleges are girls only; King's College Lagos is boys only and Queen's College Lagos girls only, the two oldest. The Federal Science and Technical Colleges run the technical and vocational stream with trade subjects alongside the WAEC curriculum, and the two Federal Science Colleges are science-focused. The Federal Government Academy at Suleja selects gifted pupils in a separate round after the common entrance.
What the fee does and does not include
The ₦100,000 a term is boarding, feeding, insurance and levies; tuition is free by law. Every college then issues its own list: uniforms, sportswear, books, a mattress and provisions, and some charge a parents' association levy. Budget ₦150,000 to ₦250,000 for the first term including the list, and ask the college for last year's invoice for a new JSS1 pupil.
Why families choose them, and what to check
Unity colleges are the cheapest recognised boarding schools in the country and their alumni networks run through every profession. The trade is large classes, ageing hostels at some campuses, and a posting that can be hundreds of kilometres from home. Visit before the exam if you can, ask about hostel capacity and the last renovation, and look at the SS3 examination entry numbers. Security at colleges in the north-east has been a concern in some years; ask the college directly.

Is the admission by merit or by quota?
Both. A share of places goes on merit nationally and a share by state quota, with cut-off marks published per state each year. The marks differ widely between states, which is the source of most of the annual argument about the system.
