What Changed in Anambra Public Schools
Starting from September 2023, the Anambra State Government made a landmark policy decision: public school education from nursery through JSS3 is now tuition-free, with most levies abolished. This policy directly benefits tens of thousands of families across the state.
What Parents No Longer Pay
- Tuition fees in government primary and junior secondary schools
- Most development and PTA levies that were previously mandatory
- Registration fees for continuing students in public schools
What Parents Still Pay
- School uniforms and sportswear (₦15,000-₦70,000 depending on school)
- Textbooks and writing materials (₦15,000-₦50,000 per session)
- Transport to and from school
- Examination fees for external exams (BECE, etc.)
Senior Secondary (SSS) Changes
For senior secondary students (SS1-SS3), levies have been capped at approximately ₦5,000 per term in public schools. This is a significant reduction from the variable and sometimes unpredictable levies previously charged.
How to Benefit
Simply enrol your child in any Anambra State government-owned primary or junior secondary school. No special application is needed beyond the standard school registration process.
Impact on Private Schools
Private schools in Anambra continue to set their own fees. However, the free education policy gives parents a genuine alternative, especially for families under financial pressure.
